Carnegie Hall Rooftop Terrace Makeover

New York, NY

Client: Carnegie Hall
Landscape Architect:  Olin Partnership
Project Manager:  Dan Sponzilli, Mike Grosso

The project included 10,000-square-feet of green roof which includes a public terrace, trees measuring up to 35’ in height, extensive masonry plantings and seating.

Carnegie Hall’s Weill Terrace 10,000 square ft. green rooftop, adjacent to the Weill Terrace Room and the new Resnick Education Wing, was built ten stories in the air and includes an abundance of maple, redbud, and linden trees and 7,000 square feet of grass, pavers and sod. An elaborate irrigation system and stunning landscape lighting was included throughout.

The new Weill Terrace is a feature that was first envisioned by the building’s original architect, William Burnet Tuthill in 1892.  Adjacent to it are the Weill Terrace Room and the new Resnick Education Wing. The terrace has become the perfect gathering place for Carnegie Hall concertgoers, performers, teachers, students, and staff members.
