Tradition Meets Innovation in Montclair NJ
Brick by Brick: A Culinary Escape

Tucked within the historic charm of Montclair, New Jersey, this nearly 100-year-old residence presented a unique opportunity and several significant challenges for our landscape design and construction team. The homeowner, a passionate chef and professional caterer, envisioned more than just a patio. He needed a dynamic outdoor space where he could entertain guests, cook, smoke food, and immerse himself in his culinary craft—rain or shine.

The existing site was far from ready. A steep slope and frequent flooding made the area virtually unusable. Poor grading led to standing water and poor drainage, and several trees were in visible decline. Yet, at the heart of the yard stood a majestic mature sycamore tree—a natural focal point that demanded careful protection throughout the design and build process.

Our team approached this project with equal parts creativity and precision. We began by generating a topographical site plan to help solve the grading issues and guide the hardscape layout. Using full-sized clay brick for authenticity and durability, we created a vibrant herringbone pattern set at a 45-degree angle. This layout wasn’t just visually captivating. It honored the home’s original architectural character and echoed the warm tones of its painted brick façade.

To frame the space and add clarity, we integrated soldier course borders, delineating outdoor “rooms” for cooking, dining, and lounging. Each line and pattern was meticulously placed to elevate the space both functionally and aesthetically.

One of the biggest challenges was resolving the site’s chronic drainage problem. We installed a subsurface drainage system complete with deep-set underground recharge chambers to collect stormwater from both the patio and the home’s roof leaders. This eco-friendly solution keeps the surface dry and recharges the local aquifer, promoting sustainability while complying with strict township zoning regulations. An all-clean stone base further enhanced sub-surface drainage and provided a solid, permeable foundation for the clay brick pavers.

Tree protection was paramount. We preserved the stunning sycamore, shielding its root zone throughout construction, while selectively removing declining trees and grinding their stumps to improve site health and space usability.

The result is a timeless yet modern outdoor environment—blending Old World aesthetics with innovative engineering. It’s not just a patio; it’s a chef’s stage, a gathering space, and a sustainable solution for a historically rich home. Through thoughtful design and expert craftsmanship, we brought our client’s vision to life while enhancing the legacy of a Montclair landmark.
