The Kimmel Pavilion of NYU Langone’s Hospital represents one of the largest scale projects in Manhattan in recent years. Hargreaves Associates and Ennead Architects collaborated on the Kimmel Pavilion addition at the NYU Medical Center campus in Manhattan. Sponzilli Landscape Group handled the landscaping installation for the entire project.
The new hospital tower at 1st Avenue and 34th Street includes a 1-acre ground level arrival plaza and a 26,000 square foot outdoor terrace on the 7th level overlooking the East River. The ground level includes an arrival garden and plaza that blends seamlessly with vehicular arrival and drop-off. The 7th level terrace includes gardens, outdoor dining and spill-out space for conferences and fundraising events. The 7th level terrace also includes outdoor space specifically designed for pediatric patients with outdoor classroom, gardens and a variety of interactive elements.
Resiliency planning was incorporated into the landscape by integrating a retractable flood barrier set within the ground level plaza. The unique micro-climatic conditions on the upper terrace inspired the program zoning as well as three different zones for the plant selection: sunny, wind- tolerant native coastal plantings; seaside garden plantings; and shade-loving, low-height, highly-textured plantings. A terrace was designed to accommodate a 24” soil depth, so planting could be set flush with the pavement, creating a more garden-like setting.
The NYU Langone – Kimmel Pavilion and Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital incorporates rooftop terraces, sprawling gardens and abundant outdoor space. The expansive campus extends a full 4-blocks on Manhattan’s First Avenue from East 30th Street to East 34th Street.
Sponzilli Landscape Group handled the landscape installation for the entire project including the 7th Floor Children’s Terrace and roof garden with a view to the Empire State Building designed to give parents access to sunlight and fresh air while staying in the hospital with their children.
This landmark urban Sponzilli Landscape project called for:
- Intricate Custom Paver Installation
- Elaborate IPE Woodwork, Seating and Decking
- Over 2,000 Cubic Yards of Engineered Soil
- A Canopy Perennial Viewing Roof
- 7” Caliper Specimen Trees Craned to Rooftop Positions
- Over 5,000 Perennials and Plantings
“It has been a great privilege to be part of the NYU Langone campus project. This is one of the largest construction projects in Manhattan. We are very proud of the beautiful outdoor spaces throughout the campus and the fact that this important project was entrusted to Sponzilli Landscape Group”.
