Complete Backyard Renovation in North Caldwell, NJ
This backyard renovation in North Caldwell, NJ, transformed the property into a more functional and inviting outdoor living space designed for family gatherings, entertaining, and everyday use. The project included an expanded brick paver patio, a custom gas fire pit, retaining walls, upgraded walkways and steps, landscape lighting, irrigation, new plantings, and extensive grading improvements to create a larger, more usable backyard. Through careful site reconfiguration and elevation adjustments, the property was redesigned to improve circulation, usability, and the connection between the home and outdoor spaces.
Patio Expansion & Masonry Installation
The centerpiece of the renovation is an expanded brick paver patio designed to provide substantially more outdoor living space for the homeowners and their guests.
The patio was constructed using Cambridge Ledgestone three-piece pavers in Toffee Onyx Lite with contrasting Sahara Chestnut borders, creating a warm and timeless appearance throughout the outdoor environment.
To accommodate the new layout, the existing retaining wall, landing, steps, and walkway connecting the driveway to the rear entrance were removed and replaced with newly constructed masonry elements that improved circulation and created a more cohesive layout across the property.
New rear steps, landings, and reinforced concrete footings were also installed to provide long-term structural stability and improved access to the backyard living areas.
Custom Fire Pit & Outdoor Gathering Space
A custom gas-fired fire pit was integrated into the patio design to create a comfortable focal point for outdoor entertaining and evening use.
To support the installation, a new gas line was routed from the opposite side of the home. The fire pit was finished with upgraded granite coping, providing a refined and durable finish that complements the surrounding masonry materials.
Grading, Lawn Expansion & Site Improvements
Extensive grading work was performed to accommodate the expanded patio footprint and improve the usability of the backyard lawn areas.
The regrading process created a larger and more level lawn space better suited for recreation, family activities, and everyday outdoor use. Due to limited site access along the right side of the property, all construction materials and equipment had to be carefully routed through a longer access path during installation.
Following construction, new sod was installed throughout the disturbed areas, allowing the homeowners to immediately enjoy the renovated landscape without waiting for seasonal grass growth.
Landscape Design, Lighting & Irrigation
A new planting design was installed to complement the updated hardscape layout and soften the surrounding architectural elements. Decorative river rock was incorporated throughout portions of the landscape to introduce additional texture and visual contrast.
The project also included a professionally integrated landscape lighting system and a new irrigation system to extend the property’s usability while supporting the landscape’s long-term performance.

Our project included replacing and expanding our existing patio, installing a drainage system to address ongoing water issues, and refreshing our landscaping. During the project, an accident resulted in our neighbor’s tree being knocked down. Sponzilli immediately contacted our neighbors directly, took full responsibility, and worked with them to find a solution they were happy with. They ultimately replaced the tree with a beautiful mature tree.
We couldn’t be happier with how our backyard turned out—it exceeded our expectations. We will absolutely use Sponzilli Landscaping Group again for any future landscaping projects.
We have used them for a backyard refresh and to creating a short stacked stone retaining wall to create a bed along the driveway.
