Pool & Patios Installation in North Caldwell, NJ
Completed in two phases, this pool and patio installation in North Caldwell, NJ transformed the property into a more functional outdoor living space for entertaining, recreation, and everyday enjoyment. The project included front landscape enhancements, custom patios, a vinyl swimming pool, a cedar pergola, retaining walls, drainage improvements, and new landscape plantings while carefully working within the property’s impervious coverage limitations.
Phase I – Patio & Site Improvements
The first phase focused on expanding the backyard patio while improving the front landscape and preparing the property for a future pool installation.
To address runoff from the neighboring property, a Belgard Brookshire retaining wall with connecting steps was installed to capture water and improve access between the side yard and backyard.
The new patio was constructed using Belgard Lafitt Rustic Slab pavers in Silex Blend with Belgard Country Manor borders in Sable Blend, creating a clean, defined outdoor entertaining space.
The remaining yard was then graded and sodded in preparation for the second phase of construction.

Phase II – Pool, Pergola & Patio Expansion
The second phase introduced a 14′ × 28′ vinyl swimming pool with a dark-colored liner selected to help maintain warmer water temperatures.
The pool features All Blue thermal-finish bullnose bluestone coping and is surrounded by a matching patio constructed with the same Belgard pavers used during Phase I, creating visual continuity throughout the landscape.
A stained cedar pergola with black iron accents defines a portion of the pool patio, providing shade and creating an inviting space for outdoor relaxation.
Elegant 3′ × 3′ bluestone steppers connect the original patio to the new pool area, allowing both outdoor spaces to function as one cohesive environment.
Landscape Planting & Lawn Installation
The landscape design complements the new outdoor living spaces with a combination of Winter Gem boxwood hedges, Drift Roses, and Limelight Hydrangea trees positioned to anchor each end of the patio.
Following construction, the remaining lawn areas were graded and sodded to complete the landscape and provide a finished appearance throughout the property.

Project Planning & Site Challenges
A key objective throughout the project was maximizing usable outdoor living space without exceeding the property’s allowable impervious coverage.
Careful planning and phased construction allowed the homeowners to achieve their long-term vision while meeting site requirements and creating a balanced, functional landscape.
Whether you’re planning one stage or a complete outdoor transformation over time, we’ll design a landscape that grows with your vision while delivering lasting beauty and functionality.
Our project included replacing and expanding our existing patio, installing a drainage system to address ongoing water issues, and refreshing our landscaping. From start to finish, Peter was fantastic. He responded quickly to every email, no matter how small the question, and was always upfront, transparent, and honest throughout the entire process. We never felt pressured into making decisions or adding to the project, the experience was stress-free.
Our town had several additional permit requirements that made the approval process much more complicated than expected. Everyone at Sponzilli stayed on top of the process, keeping us informed along the way.
The installation crew was also great. They were courteous, punctual, hardworking, and kept disruption to a minimum.
During the project, an accident resulted in our neighbor’s tree being knocked down. Sponzilli immediately contacted our neighbors directly, took full responsibility, and worked with them to find a solution they were happy with. They ultimately replaced the tree with a beautiful mature tree.
We couldn’t be happier with how our backyard turned out—it exceeded our expectations. We will absolutely use Sponzilli Landscaping Group again for any future landscaping projects.
We have used them for a backyard refresh and to creating a short stacked stone retaining wall to create a bed along the driveway. Their crew is knowledgable and hard working and we had three great projects. Their design drawings sealed the deal for me, so wonderful to visually see what it would look like!
