This backyard renovation in West Caldwell, NJ transformed an outdated and disconnected outdoor environment into a cohesive space designed for entertaining, relaxation, and everyday family enjoyment.
The project included a complete gunite pool renovation, new patios, an outdoor kitchen, pergola installation, drainage improvements, landscape lighting, planting design, and grading enhancements.

Pool Renovation & Outdoor Living Enhancements
The existing gunite pool underwent a comprehensive renovation that included new custom-cut bluestone coping, updated tile and plaster finishes, new pool equipment, and upgraded cleanout systems.
Surrounding the pool, previously disconnected outdoor spaces were removed and replaced with a more unified design that better supports entertaining and recreation.
The renovated pool now serves as the focal point of the backyard, connecting the surrounding patios, outdoor living areas, and entertainment spaces.
Patio Construction & Pergola Installation
A deteriorating raised deck and aging stamped concrete patio were removed to make way for new hardscape installations that improve both aesthetics and usability.
The new patio areas incorporate Techo-Bloc Blu 60 pavers with Antika accent borders, creating a timeless appearance and durable surface for outdoor living. A raised thermal-finish bluestone patio adds architectural interest while establishing additional gathering areas throughout the property.
A large vinyl pergola was installed to provide shade and define the outdoor living space, creating a comfortable setting for relaxation and entertaining.
Outdoor Kitchen & Entertainment Features
A custom outdoor kitchen was integrated into the design to enhance the property’s entertaining capabilities.
The grill station features natural stone veneer construction paired with a granite countertop, creating a durable and attractive outdoor cooking area that complements the surrounding masonry elements.
Natural stone veneer seat walls and columns were constructed on concrete footings and CMU block foundations, adding both structure and visual character to the outdoor environment.
Drainage Improvements & Site Grading
During construction, significant weather events revealed drainage challenges that had not been apparent during the initial planning stages. Heavy rainfall demonstrated how changing site elevations could affect both the property and neighboring areas.
To address these conditions, new surface drains were installed to manage stormwater runoff, while leader drains were added to redirect roof water to more appropriate discharge locations within the property.
Additional grading improvements helped enhance drainage performance while creating a more usable and functional lawn area.
Landscape Design, Privacy Planting & Lighting
New planting areas and boulder accents were incorporated to soften the hardscape features and provide additional privacy throughout the backyard.
A professionally integrated landscape lighting system enhances visibility and extends the enjoyment of the outdoor spaces after dark, while a new irrigation system supports the long-term health and performance of the landscape.

Our project included replacing and expanding our existing patio, installing a drainage system to address ongoing water issues, and refreshing our landscaping. From start to finish, Peter was fantastic. He responded quickly to every email, no matter how small the question, and was always upfront, transparent, and honest throughout the entire process. Our town had several additional permit requirements that made the approval process much more complicated than expected. Everyone at Sponzilli stayed on top of the process, keeping us informed along the way.
The installation crew was also great. They were courteous, punctual, hardworking, and kept disruption to a minimum.
During the project, an accident resulted in our neighbor’s tree being knocked down. Sponzilli immediately contacted our neighbors directly, took full responsibility, and worked with them to find a solution they were happy with. They ultimately replaced the tree with a beautiful mature tree.
We couldn’t be happier with how our backyard turned out—it exceeded our expectations. We will absolutely use Sponzilli Landscaping Group again for any future landscaping projects.
We have used them for a backyard refresh and to creating a short stacked stone retaining wall to create a bed along the driveway.
