With its prominent architectural profile, the Whitney Museum rests gracefully between the Hudson River in lower Manhattan and the NYC’s inspired High Line. The Whitney commissioned Piet Oudolf, the influential father of the “New Perennial” landscape architecture movement and Mathews Nielsen Landscape Architects, to create the overall landscape design of the building.
Sponzilli Landscape Group was then retained for their outstanding experience and mastery of urban landscape installation and development. Sponzilli supplied and installed engineered soil, perennial plantings, a large specimen Red Maple Tree (30′ to 35′ ht.) and an extensive green roof with a mixed variety Sedum carpet.
The Sponzilli team was contracted to install the unique urban landscape project at the new Whitney, creating an artful marriage between the city-scape and the museum’s public plaza, only steps away from the entrance to the High Line. The project was completed under a very tight timeline in preparation for the grand opening of the museum.
