This Wayne residence was originally an older split level home in a wooded area completely covered by bushes and trees. The owners rebuilt and renovated the house, and Sponzilli Landscape Group, Inc in Fairfield created a stellar backyard design to go with it. Overgrown trees, existing bushes and greenery were removed and the yard was leveled. Dirt was excavated and brought in to grade the landscape with enough fill so that a pool could be installed.
According to landscaper Richard Sponzilli, “We built terraces of walls with a major staircase leading down to the pool area. The terraces are four to five feet high in various areas with a 10-foot wide staircase bringing you to the lower level of the yard.” The arbor and balcony structure near the house incorporates a sitting area with an outdoor kitchen, barbecue and dining table and chairs. On this level, the homeowners can enjoy the company of friends and still oversee the activity in their majestic backyard. For privacy, both sides of the house are lined with 12 to 14 foot evergreens, including Norway spruce, blue spruce, and concolor fir trees.
Two thousand square feet of pavers surround a free-form pool that boasts a 4 x 7 foot waterfall. A pool cabana was built by Sponzilli at the end of the yard to include a changing room inside, with bar and seating area outside. A steel enclosure can be engaged to protect the cabana in bad weather.
Off to the side of the yard is children’s playground with swings, slide and sandbox, and the newest rubber mulch for safe play. A beautiful shrub design along the house and gardens in the pool area provide year round color and interest. Classic boxwood, holly, and dwarf spruce specimens are planted within a lovely mass of colorful perennials. Mood lighting has been installed to enhance landscaping details while providing greater usability of the yard throughout the evening.
