Sponzilli Landscape Group is very proud to announce that they were awarded First Place in a national awards ceremony by Hardscape North America (HNA) on October 19th.
This prestigious accomplishment was announced at HNA’s Tradeshow and Education Event – Hardscape North America and Equip Exposition. This industry gathering is the premier expo for hardscape contractors, dealers, and landscape professionals. The event spanned three days, October 18-20, 2023, and was held at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Kentucky.
Sponzilli’s National 2023 HNA Hardscape Project Award
Sponzilli won this significant national recognition in the category of “Combination of Hardscape Products – Residential (size more than 4,000 sf).” The property project was for the Hu’s residence in Harding Township, NJ.
The award went to:
- Contractor – Sponzilli Landscape Group
- Products Used – Techo-Bloc
- Designer – Andrew Lastella
Andrew Lastella, the Project Designer, has been with Sponzilli Landscape Group for over 12 years. Lastella is a full-time Senior Landscape Architect with the Group and is a NJ Licensed Landscape Architect and Member of the American Society of Landscape Architects.
More About the Hu Residence
The client originally contacted Sponzilli for their expertise in creating an expansive outdoor living space at their newly built home in New Vernon, NJ. The project had both landscaping and hardscaping requirements.
Although Sponzilli had a clean slate to work with—the land had not been previously developed. This project held its own specific challenges, including keeping within restrictions for impervious ground coverage. The homeowners wanted to have lots of patio space for entertaining, a driveway with unique elements, an outdoor pool, and an expansive lawn area.
Project elements for the completed outdoor living space included:
- A vanishing-edge granite pool
- Attractive and extensive pool patio
- New 15’ driveway
- 8’ wide gas-burning firepit
- Plenty of plant beds and other plantings
- Natural stone veneer retaining wall
- Expansive, artfully landscaped lawn space
- Pavilion with outdoor kitchen, built-in fireplace, dining and sitting areas
- Plenty of outdoor seating by the firepit and poolside
Outdoor hardscaping materials included high-end pavers, granite stone veneer, and bluestone.

The Exposition
The expo was both a place to display new products and learn from leaders in the field. It has been described as a “mega industry event” of HNA combined with the Equip Exposition.
The event offered many educational programs and networking opportunities for those in the hardscaping industry—from leading professionals to new hardscaping businesses. Participants had opportunities to hear from some of the top contractors in North America during informative sessions and demonstrations.
The Expo was also home to over 850 exhibits. A large 20+ acre outdoor area was dedicated for outdoor demonstrations.
The HNA Awards
The HNA Awards recognize contractors, designers, and producers who install outstanding hardscaping projects for both residential and commercial installations. Winners were announced at the HNA Awards Recognition presentation that was held during the expo.
The award recipients are featured on the HNA website and highlighted in other industry publications.
To receive an HNA award is an important and sought-after achievement. It’s a recognition that your work is among the best work nationally.
Sponzilli achieved their award for a combination of hardscape products; other award categories focused on singular achievements, such as incorporating concrete pavers, porcelain pavers, or natural stone into a hardscaping design.
This year, Hardscape North America received a record-breaking number of submissions to be considered for awards totaling 219 for all award categories.
The HNA awards are produced by the Concrete Masonry & Hardscape Association.
